There are many things associated with the steelpan that has controversy over what to call them, mallets are no exception. When pan started, oil drums were struck with sticks. Eventually it was discovered that one can get a sweeter sound by wrapping the rubber from a bicycle tire tube around the stick. That was the beginning of the modern pan mallet. Many people insist that since it started as just a stick, that the name should remain as stick. Others, however, feel that once a separate tip was added to the stick it became a mallet.
